  • In December 2002, 26 million people worldwide visited online dating sites, says ComScore Media Matrix, a unit of ComScore Networks.


  • Traffic to dating sites has increased 100% year-on-year reveal the latest figures from Hitwise.


  • According to Jupiter Media Matrix, 45% of British women now use the internet.


  • The British government has said that if the singles population continues to grow at the current rate, the UK economy will be facing a major housing and benefits crisis within the next 10 years.


  • A 2002 study by Professor Richard Scase of Canterbury Business School revealed that approximately two million people in Britain currently use a dating service to find a partner - and the study concluded that figure would double within the next five years.

Jeffrey Gavin, the lecturer that headed the project, said: "Contrary to popular belief, chat rooms don't lead to shallow and impersonal relationships, they lead to really close relationships because people express themselves more freely on the internet."


  • Dr Adam Johnson, a psychologist from the Open University, agrees: "The specifics of internet communication help explain the comparative success of online dating. The following are taken from the Office of National Statistics Census, 2001:
  • From a population of 58.7 million, 24% are single and another 10% are separated or divorced. So that's a UK singles population of at least 34%.


  • In 2001, the number of divorces granted in the UK increased by 1.4% (157,000 from 155,000), the first time it's increased since 1996. An estimated one in three UK marriages end in divorce.


  • There are fewer men than women at all ages over 21.


  • It is predicted that by the year 2010, single households will out number married ones in the UK.
